Sourav, Tanushree unveil installation at Maddox Square depicting Maa Durga taking on 'Mahishasur of plastic'

Kolkata: Renowned cricketer Sourav Ganguly unveiled a large installation depicting 'Maa Durga fighting Mahishasur of Plastic' at Maddox Square on Friday. Tollywood actor Tanushree Chakraborty was also present on the occasion. The installation, a part of the Esho Gori Nobo Bongo campaign (an initiative taken up by a paint company), has been created with recycled plastic products.

Over 15,000 school children and residents from over 2,000 households have donated plastic articles to create the installation.

"Every good thing starts at home. If we want to stop using plastic then we have to begin from home. This is a very good initiative to safeguard the future of our environment. A very happy Durga Puja to all of you," said the former cricket captain, after unveiling the installation.

A total of over three tonnes of plastic products have been collected and used for creating the installation. To encourage contribution of plastic waste, bins had been placed at various locations across the city.

Concerned about the harmful effects of plastic on the environment, Tanushree pointed out that Maa Durga is coming and she will remove the habit of using plastic from our daily life.

"Plastic can be recycled but cannot be destroyed. We think it is beneficial for us but in reality it is harmful to our environment," said the actor while interacting with the pandal-hoppers.

The Durga Puja at Maddox Square, one of the biggest crowd-pullers in South Kolkata, is known for its traditional 'adda', in which several city-dwellers of different age groups take part.

The Puja committee of Maddox Square, a typical traditional Puja pandal, creates an ambience each year which is unique to it.
