Soon, disaster management awareness progs among students of more schools: Javed Khan

The state Disaster Management department has taken initiative to create awareness among school-goers regarding the safety measures that are to be taken during any natural calamity.

The state Disaster Management minister Javed Khan, on Monday, said in the Assembly that the programme to create awareness among students has already taken place in 600 schools in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar districts. Similar programmes will be taken up for school-goers in other parts of the state.

He said that it took around two years to complete the awareness programme in the schools of three districts of North Bengal. The awareness campaign will benefit the students as, from a very young age, they will be aware of the do's and don'ts of avoiding natural calamity and at the same time they will also be trained in being aware of how to save oneself and others during natural calamities.

Experts were engaged to make people from all walks of life and all ages know what they must do if a natural calamity comes knocking by.

Initiatives were also taken to create awareness by holding programmes at different fairs. Thousands of people turn up and gather in a fair and therefore, more people can be reached if an awareness programme gets organised in a fair. The same has been organised in Subhas Mela, Milan mela, Ganga Sagar Mela, Vivek Mela, Mati Utsav and Kreta Suraksha Mela.

Mock drills on flood management, earthquake and cyclone are often conducted in districts. Besides conducting awareness campaigns, SSMS based early warning system was also brought into place. Alerts on any natural calamity like cyclone, tsunami and heavy rainfall are now given through SMS in English and Bengali. Web-Based Incident Response software was also introduced for real time analysis of data to ensure better management of disaster. Multi-purpose cyclone shelter and relief shelters were also set up in districts.
