Son kills 50-yr-old mother over property dispute

Kolkata: In a tragic incident, a 50-year-old woman was killed by her son following a quarrel over property.

The incident took place at Salerpur area of Arambag in Hooghly on Sunday morning. Police have already arrested the victim's son, identified as Robin Kundu, who has been working as a civic volunteer. The incident has sparked tension among the local residents in the area.

The local residents told police that the accused often engaged in quarrels with his mother, Dola Kundu, over some property related matters. The victim used to also get involved in quarrels with her sister-in-law. Like other days, a quarrel broke out between the victim and her sister-in-law Maya Kundu, over a properly related dispute on Sunday morning. When the accused woke up, he found the two women shouting at each other. He asked them to stop but both the women continued quarrelling without paying any heed to him.

The youth then chased his aunt with a stick when she fled from the spot. He then asked his mother why she was shouting. Following this, a fresh quarrel broke out between the woman and her son.

The incident soon turned ugly when the accused hit his mother's head with a stick, after which the woman fell on the floor. She was declared brought dead after being taken to a nearby hospital. The victim's daughter Sushama told the police that her aunt often hurled expletives at her mother. Due to this, there had been quarrels on various occasions.

She also told the police that she was away from home when the incident took place on Sunday morning. When she returned home she found her mother lying on the floor with severe injuries on her head.

An official of the local Panchayat office lodged a complaint with the police, on the basis of which police arrested the accused. A detailed probe has been initiated. Police are also interrogating the family members of the victim in this connection.
