Kolkata: Seven new buses will start operating ahead of Durga Puja for better connectivity between North Bengal and Kolkata.

Sources said that the buses will be inaugurated on Thursday from the Islampore depot of the North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC). State Transport minister Suvendu Adhikari is scheduled to be present at the programme.

Out of the seven buses, three are air-conditioned ones that will connect Kolkata to Siliguri. There will be also buses to connect Raiganj and Balurghat. Two non air-conditioned buses will be operating from Raiganj and two others from Balurghat.

It may be mentioned that many buses were introduced earlier and now with the introduction of the seven new buses, the service will improve further.

Besides inauguration of the buses, the Islampore depot itself will also be inaugurated. The depot has been developed at a cost of Rs 58 lakh. At the same time, cheques will also be distributed among those whose vehicles were damaged on the day of the bandh on September 26. A Safe Drive Save Life programme will also be held, as a part of which helmets will be distributed at the programme.
