SER earns Rs 209.36 crore from scrap sale

Kolkata: South Eastern Railway (SER) has earned Rs 209.36 crore from scrap sale surpassing the proportionate target of

Rs 192 crore set by the ministry of Railways.

The scrap sale by the SER in the current year has surpassed the last year's sale figures, which stands at Rs 171.80 crore that is 21.86 percent more than the total sale of the last financial year.

All these scrap material have been sold in transparent and competitive manner through e-auction.

"The move for scrap sale is aimed at generating additional revenue. The record revenue was possible due to regular monitoring of this activity and intense supervision at senior officers level for prompt identification of scrap and offering the scrap for e-auction," a senior official of SER said.

The major component of the scrap sale are 25,262 metric tonnes (MT) of engineering scrap (which includes scrap rails), 11,004 MT of other ferrous scrap, 1455 MT of non-ferrous scrap, 511 condemned wagons, 172 condemned coaches and 7 condemned diesel locomotives, which have been disposed of in current financial

year.

"We have launched a mission to become scrap-free railway. Earnings from sale of scrap not only increase railway's revenue but also helps in keeping tracks, stations, workshops and depots neat and clean," the official further said.

It may be mentioned here the performance of South Eastern Railway in maintaining passenger traffic has also been spectacular in the current financial year. During the first ten months of current fiscal (from April 2018 to January 2019), SER has been able to earn Rs.1725.58 crore from originating passenger traffic, registering an increase of 5.07 percent over the figure of Rs.1642.37 crore yielded during the corresponding period of last year.

The SER from April 2018 to Januarry 2019 carried 222.85 million originating passengers which is 6.42 million more than the corresponding period of previous year, registering a growth of 2.97 percent.
