Sangeet Samman for vocalist Haimanti Shukla

Kolkata: Vocalist Haimanti Shukla will be given the Sangeet Samman by Mayor Firhad Hakim at the inaugural session of the 67th Dover Lane Music Conference at Nazrul Mancha on January 22.

Debashis Kumar, Member Mayor-in-Council (Parks and Squares), Sanjay Budhia, Managing Director of Patton Group and B K Chandra, Chairman of P C Chandra Group will be present at the event. The evening session will begin with a vocal recital by Haimanti Sukla.

Shukla received her training in Hindustani classical vocal music from her father Pandit Harihar Shukla. She started performing on stage from 1970 and recorded her first song Eto kanna noy amar in 1972. Shukla, a post graduate student of Rabindra Bharati University can present Hindustani classical ragas, ghazals, devotional songs and popular numbers with equal ease.

She has sung in many popular Bengali films like Ami Shey O Sakha (1977), Sister (1977), Arohon (2010), and Amrita (2012). Her Hindi song Kahan se aya bhadra in the film Chashme Baddoor has remained very popular. Shukla was awarded the Banga Bibhusan in 2014. She gives regular coaching in classical music. The other vocalists who will be taking part at the music conference include Ulhas Kashalkar, Parveen Sultana, Rajan and Sajan Misra, Ashwini Bhide Deshpande, Bharati Pratap and Sanjeev Abhyankar among others. Among the instrumentalists are Hariprasad Chaurasia, Kumar Bose, Tejendra Narayan Mazumdar, Debojyoti Bose, Sahid Parveez and Maihar Band.

The conference will be on whole night on all the four days from January 22 to 25.
