Renovated Uttar Para Vagrant Home to be inaugurated soon

Kolkata: The state government will soon unveil the renovated Uttar Para Vagrant Home.

"It might be mentioned that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had always focused on development of infrastructure of state-run vagrant homes. We are constructing new houses beside the old ones. We have already inaugurated the new building at Dhakuria Vagrant Home. The renovated Beliaghata Vagrant Home was also inaugurated recently.

"The final date of inauguration of the renovated Uttar Para Vagrant Home is awaited," said Women and Child Development and Social Welfare minister Shashi Panja after inaugurating Bhabaghure and Patha Sishu Mela at College Square on Saturday.

Bengali television actress Ankita Majumder and Ushasi Ray were also present on the occasion.

"It is my pleasure coming here. I appreciate the

effort of Women and Child Development and Social Welfare Department," said Majumdar.

The mela creates a unique opportunity for the inmates of different Vagrant Homes run by the Vagrancy Directorate under the Department of Women and Child Development and Social Welfare. In a bid to give exposure to the hidden talent of the inmates, the products made by them are offered for sale at the exhibition cum sale.

"Bhabaghure and Patha Sishu Mela took a new dimension after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee came to power in May 2011," pointed out Panja.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation will soon come up with a night shelter at Kalighat for putting up vargrants while another shed is being created at Dhapa on one lakh square feet area for putting up rag pickers.

The Scheme of Shelter for urban homeless seeks to provide shelter to homeless people to live with dignity in Kolkata, Howrah and Asansol Municipal Corporation areas.

At present, 38 shelters are being run with support from NGOs in three areas of which 32 are in Kolkata Municipal Corporation, three each in Howrah Municipal Corporation and Asansol Municipal Corporation areas.
