PWD floats tender for reducing load on Belgachia Bridge
Kolkata: The state Public Works Department (PWD) has invited tender for the removal of superimposed dead load and necessary restoration of the carriageway of Belgachia Railway Overbridge (ROB). The ROB is not in a good condition and the load on it has increased further with the Talla Bridge being closed for heavy vehicles since the last week of September.
The Rs 30.42 lakh e-tender floated by PWD mentions that the implementing agency will have to take enough preventive measures to control air pollution and the work will have to be completed within seven days from its commencement.
"We have set a target of one month to complete the whole process. We have also said that the implementing agency will be liable to repair any defect for a period of three years," a senior official of PWD said.
According to the official, the surface bitumen should be removed to clear off the additional load on the bridge but the concerned contractor cannot use vibrator because the tremor created by it may cause further damage to the condition of the bridge. An official in the office of the Executive Engineer in the North Division that has floated the tender, said that they will soon call for another tender for the removal of the tram tracks so that the ROB doesn't have to bear any additional load.
It may be mentioned that experts have conducted a health study of Belgachia Bridge and have found it to be in bad condition, being incapable of carrying heavy load. They have also recommended pulling the bridge down.
After the closure of Talla Bridge, many vehicles were diverted through the Belgachia Bridge which increased the load on it to a great extent. "The necessary repair will ensure that there is no further damage to the condition of the bridge. However, we cannot stop vehicle movement on this bridge with the Talla Bridge being closed," a PWD official said.
