Power dept to table Bill on lifts, escalators & travelators

Kolkata: The state Power department is expected to table The West Bengal Lifts, Escalators and Travelators Bill, 2019 on Tuesday, in the monsoon session of the Assembly that kicked off from Monday. The Bill is aimed at ensuring the safety and security of people.

The Bill makes it mandatory for the owner of a premise with lift, escalator or travelator facilities to appoint a duly qualified person or firm for maintenance and they will have to communicate about the person or the firm to the 'Inspector of Lifts' and Police Commissioner in Kolkata or to the district magistrate in other places of the state.

"The Lift and Escalators Act 1955 was outdated and the new device 'travelator' was not included in the Act. We have included it in this new one," state Power minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay said.
