Police seize 16 spools of Chinese manja, 1 prosecuted

Kolkata: To put a curb on the use of Chinese manja, police on Wednesday conducted a raid at Jan Nagar Road in Beniapukur and seized several kite spools rolled with Chinese manja.

Earlier, several persons were injured while riding two-wheelers on Maa flyover after Chinese manja got stuck on the flyover guard walls which in turn entangled around the bikers' throats and faces.

Though in most of the cases, complaints were lodged, the police failed to identify any of the accused persons. Though police tried to find out about the sellers of Chinese manja through sources, there was no news about who were involved in the sale of the material.

On Wednesday, cops from Beniapukur police station conducted a raid at a shop in Jan Nagar Road and found a person identified as Sheikh Shahzada selling Chinese manja. He was detained and a search was conducted at his shop. Police found 16 kite spools rolled with Chinese manja. Later, Shahzada was prosecuted as per provisions of the law.
