Pitched battle on the streets as BJP workers clash with police

Kolkata: Chandni Chowk area almost turned into a battlefield on Wednesday noon after leaders and workers of the BJP youth wing tried to reach Victoria House protesting against the exorbitant electricity tariff in the state. Despite police asking them to stop near E-Mall, the saffron party workers broke barricades and kept on moving ahead.

Six police personnel including a constable and other officers were injured. The Officer-in-Charge of Bowbazar police station also sustained an eye injury. The Kolkata Police might register a suo moto case against the BJP workers.

The Trinamool Congress reacted sharply to the allegations of high tariff. "A party which is run by the likes of (industrialist) Adani, sees others in the same light. They should behave democratically. People are not accepting such comments on their part," said state minister and TMC leader Tapas Roy. At around 1 pm, BJP's rally from the state party office began and after an hour, it reached Chandni Chowk area. Police had placed guardrails and barricades in order to stop the rally from reaching the Victoria House for possible deterioration of law and order situation.

When the cops tried to prevent the BJP workers for breaking the barricades, the party workers allegedly started pelting stones at the police. Despite repeated requests, they did not bother to stop and allegedly attacked police personnel who were at the forefront. The police retaliated by primarily using water cannons to disperse the mob. The cops also had to fire tear gas shells in order to prevent the hooliganism of the BJP workers. Several BJP workers have been detained and were taken to the central lock-up in Lalbazar. The saffron party leaders alleged that the police deliberately attacked BJP workers despite a peaceful march by them. During the period, vehicular traffic was suspended along Chittaranjan Avenue towards Esplanade and was diverted from Girish Park.

Also, vehicular traffic from Esplanade towards Girish Park was diverted via Lenin Sarani. Due to this, huge traffic snarls took place causing inconvenience to daily commuters.
