Kolkata: More than 850 persons were arrested across the city for violating the restriction norms imposed by the state and Central government, from Tuesday evening till Wednesday evening.

On Wednesday, police started naka checking and forced several people who had been found on the streets for no reason and non-essential purposes to return home. Police also patrolled the areas where gatherings took place and dispersed the mobs.

Kolkata Police on Wednesday informed that the number of arrests have gone down a bit compared to Tuesday, which may be a result of the action taken. The maximum arrests from Tuesday night till Wednesday afternoon were made from South East Division. Anti-Rowdy Squad of Detective Department was pressed into action to conduct raid in some specific pockets in the city to vacate the streets.

In major intersections, traffic police personnel with assistance from local police stations were found stopping every vehicle other than ambulances and government vehicles for checking.

Anyone found trying to justify non-essential needs are being forced to return or are being arrested. People connected with emergency services, however, are being allowed to go following verification.

Meanwhile, amidst checking in the city, a Sub-Inspector (SI) of Bidhannagar Police was reportedly heckled by a woman while performing naka checking. Sources informed that on Wednesday afternoon, SI Suman Bhattacharya of Bidhannagar North police station along with other police personnel was stopping vehicles for checking at the PNB Island.

Tension broke out after he saw an oncoming cab and stopped it. While talking to the driver, Bhattacharya found that a woman and her friend had come to Salt Lake from Picnic Garden area.

As soon as the SI asked the driver why he had come there, the woman started shouting on him claiming that she and her friend came to the area to buy some food items. All of a sudden, the woman pricked a pimple on her face and rubbed it on Bhattacharya's uniform.

Police immediately took the keys from the driver and detained him and the youth accompanying the woman. Later, women police personnel went to the spot and detained the accused woman.

All three of them were arrested later for assaulting police, disobeying orders by police, violating restriction norms and other allegations.

Police across Bengal strictly followed the instruction by the state government and forced people found loitering on the streets for no reason to return home. In several places, police even had to resort to lathi-charge in order to disperse the violators.
