Outsiders vandalise JU union room, 2 held

Kolkata: Some drunken outsiders vandalised the Arts union room of Jadavpur University on Thursday night. A student of the varsity, along with two security guards, were injured when they tried to stop the offenders.
The Jadavpur police station has already arrested two persons for the act of vandalism on the basis of a complaint lodged by the university authorities.
It has been learnt that some outsiders suddenly entered the campus at around 10 pm on Thursday and started hurling abuses and creating nuisance in the campus. When the security guards and a student who was in the Arts union room, protested and told them to go out of the campus, they got infuriated and beat them up.
While leaving the campus they also ransacked the union room situated just beside gate number 4 in the university. The students demanded beefing up of security in the campus in the wake of the incident.
Registrar Pradip Kumar Ghosh said, "We immediately took steps as soon as we received news of the attack. Police rushed to the spot and arrested the two persons from the spot. We will soon hold a meeting involving all stakeholders to prevent such incidents in future."
It may be mentioned that the demand for checking identity cards and installation of more CCTVs were raised several times in the varsity on earlier occasions.
However, the implementation was not possible as students were dead against checking of identity cards for entry in the campus.
