One arrested over abusive comment on Bratya's Facebook post

Kolkata: Bidhannagar Police has arrested a person from Tripura for allegedly posting abusive comments on a Facebook post put up by state Technology and Electronics minister Bratya Basu.

He was brought to Kolkata in transit remand and produced before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) BIdhannagar on Saturday. Police sources informed that he is well connected and a sympathiser of the RSS.

According to police, Basu lodged a complaint with the Bidhannagar cyber crime police station on August 17, alleging that a person identified as Tushar Sharma had posted some comments using abusive language on a Facebook post put up by him. The comments were made towards Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Immediately, police started the case on charges of defamation; word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman and punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form. Police soon traced Sharma's Internet Protocol (IP) address, which was located at Ambassa in Dhalai district of Tripura. Wasting no time, a team from the Bidhannagar cyber crime police station went to Tripura. Sharma was arrested from his house in Thakurpally Kulai, Ambassa in Tripura. His mobile phone was also seized, which was used for posting the comments.

On October 6, Sharma was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Ambassa Court, with a prayer for allowing a five-day transit remand. But the order was kept pending for two days, as his health condition was not good as per Sharma.

On October 11, the prayer for transit remand was granted as Sharma was found fit during medical examination. He was remanded to 3 days police custody after being produced before the ACJM, Bidhannagar on Saturday.
