One arrested for running fake coconut oil racket

Kolkata: Baguiati police station has arrested a person from Prafullakanan in Keshtopur for allegedly manufacturing and bottling fake coconut oil using the brand name of a multinational company.

According to police, a person identified as Shyamal Saha approached Baguiati police station claiming to be a detective working for a private agency on Wednesday.

He said he was authorised by a multinational company to investigate into manufacturing and bottling of fake coconut oil that is being sold in the market using his client

company's name. Saha informed that he found one Keshto Kamal Sarkar, a resident of Prafullakanan in Keshtopur, is doing a business of manufacturing fake coconut oil and storing it at his own house during his investigation.

After Saha lodged a complaint, a team from Baguiati police station raided the house at AA/5A, Prafullakanan and found suspicious oil and bottles. When Sarkar was questioned about the products he could not provide satisfactory answers. He was detained and interrogated at the

police station. Sources informed that during interrogation Sarkar admitted to have manufactured fake coconut oil by using a multinational company's name.

Police seized 100 bottles full of fake coconut oil, 300 blank bottles along with funnels and containers. He was arrested immediately on charges of offence of infringement of copyright or other rights conferred (63 copyright act), possession of plates for purpose of making infringing copies (65 copyright act) and cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property (420 IPC).

Sarkar was produced before the Barasat Chief Judicial Magistrate's (CJM) Court on Wednesday with an appeal for police custody. After hearing Public Prosecutor and defense counsel's petition, magistrate rejected the bail application and granted 3-day police custody. The sleuths suspect there might be several other persons who had worked with Sarkar in this racket.
