No role of students' union during admission: Education minister

Kolkata: State Education minister Partha Chatterjee made it clear on Saturday that the students' union should not take part in the admission process of the colleges.

"Admission will be online and strictly on the basis of merit. The union will not take part in the admission process. If we find any teaching or non-teaching staff lending support to the students' union during admission, the Education department will take action," Chatterjee reiterated.

The activities of the students' union were under scanner after a clash broke out at Dinabandhu Andrews College in Garia on Friday afternoon.

"I have directed the

police administration to take suitable steps and legal action against the offenders and we are hopeful that they will carry out a proper probe and do the needful," the minister maintained.

Under Chatterjee's direction, the union at the college was broken on Saturday.

"There will be no union in the college till the next elections are conducted," a member of the college's governing body said.

Local councillor Bappaditya Dasgupta met Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and informed her of the incident at the college.

Chatterjee also emphasised that any decision about the college will be taken in consultation with Banerjee.
