Couple stand up against eve-teasers, get thrashed

A couple was thrashed by some goons for protesting against eve-teasing at Narendrapur under Sonapur police station in South 24-Parganas on Monday night.

It was learnt that the couple was returning home from their workplace late on Monday when some local youth were boozing by the side of the road.

Some of the accused started hurling abusive languages at the woman who resides in the nearby area. Seeing this, her husband came to her rescue. The miscreants also pounced on the woman. Her husband was beaten up when he raised a voice against the accused. When the woman tried to free her husband from the clutches of the miscreants, they also hurt the woman.

The couple alleged that none of the local residents came to their rescue probably because the miscreants are involved in various criminal activities. It was learnt that the miscreants often booze in the area and tease the passers-by but nobody has dared to raise any complaints against the accused.

In this incident as well, the miscreants threatened the couple of dire consequences if they lodge any complaint in the local police station. The miscreants fled from the spot after the incident. Some people found that the victims lying on the ground and rescued them. The incident had triggered tension in the area. The victims were taken to a nearby health centre and later released as their condition was stable.

Local people alleged that police do not take action against the miscreants despite repeated complaints. They said that there is no police vigil in the area, which is frequented by the goons at night. The victims' family members also told the police that they were receiving threat calls from the accused as they have registered a complaint. Police have started a probe into the incident and are conducting raids to nab the culprits.
