Man found hanging at home, murder suspected

A drunken man was allegedly murdered by his family members at Ashighar area in Siliguri on Sunday night.

The investigators learnt that the atrocious nature of the man often used to put the family members in trouble. This grew anger among them as a result of which they killed him at their house.

The drunken man, who was killed, used to beat up parents, wife and son for money. He had a growing business in a fish market at Siliguri, but could not continue due to his addiction. Police found his body hanging with ceiling fan.

However, some investigators have a different opinion. They believe that the man tried to commit suicide by hanging himself. His family members tried to save
him, by pulling the rope down but the knot was accidentally strengthened in that effort and the man was choked to death.

"We have sent the body for post mortem. The family members have been taken to the police station and detained for interrogation," said a police officer.

"It is really difficult to believe that four family members, including two senior citizens, killed the man. I suspect it was an accident. They tried to pull the man down, but the knot in his neck tightened by their effort," the investigating officer said.

Meanwhile, another officer, who was also involved in the investigation, has a different view.

"The family members were irritated by the behaviour of the man. They have been tolerating him for long. The man used to beat his parents and son in front of his
wife. He used to torture his wife in front of his son for money. He sold his wife's gold jewelleries, took money that was kept in the bank for his son's education, snatched the pension from his father and tried to kill his mother to get her gold jewelleries," the officer said.

"His wife Jyotsna Das informed us that the man tried to kill his parents on Sunday night after failing to get Rs 30,000 from them. Jyotsna saved her in-laws and she was beaten up by her husband for that.

Later, the family members overpowered the man. He was tied by a rope and hanged with the ceiling fan," the officer said. However, the senior officers are still interrogating the family members.
