New Town accident: Police yet to retrieve data from vehicle

Kolkata: Police and forensic experts are finding it difficult to retrieve information from the data recorder of the car which met with an accident on Tuesday in New Town, which claimed the lives of three youths.

As the car was damaged badly due to the impact of the collision, the electrical system had stopped functioning due to a short-circuit. The mechanical examination of the car was done on Wednesday as well.

According to sources, on Tuesday morning after the car rammed into a pillar, the front portion of the vehicle where the main controlling units are located was badly damaged. In such sophisticated cars, the electrical connection automatically gets disconnected after an accident to save the car from fire due to short-circuit.

On Tuesday, forensic experts tried to provide power from an external source to the electrical system of the vehicle in order to retrieve the data. However, the system did not work properly due to short-circuit.

Forensic experts are now waiting for representatives of the car's manufacturer to arrive, as they can take out the recorder which would be seized for forensic examination.

On the other hand on Wednesday afternoon, mechanical examination of the vehicle was conducted by the officials of Regional Transport Authority, Salt Lake. They would provide a report on the technical issues related to the car's operation, which is expected to help the investigation.

Sources informed that the condition of Mainak Jain, the youth who was driving the car is stable at the moment, but he is still undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the city.

Police may question him and Sarbajit Singh, the other surviving youth, after they get better to know more about the accident.

Apart from this, forensic experts and police came to know that the airbags, which came out after the collision, were not inbuilt and had been attached later. However, it is assumed that Singh and Jain were saved only because the airbags functioned properly during the accident.
