Man, wife held for murder of Malda woman

Kolkata: Malda district police have cracked the murder case in which a woman was killed on December 5 and her body was burnt to hide the identity.

Police have arrested a youth identified as Bapan Ghosh and also detained his wife. Investigators also stated that the deceased woman was not raped but she was killed over some relationship dispute.

Earlier, BJP leaders had claimed that the woman was raped and burnt to death at Dhantala in Malda.

As the body was burnt, police failed to identify her. But after preliminary investigation and getting primary opinion of autopsy examination, police claimed that the deceased was not raped.

Despite police statement on this, the saffron party kept on spreading the rape theory and also had compared it with the recent rape and murder case of Hyderabad. Meanwhile, the police clicked pictures of the

jewellery which were found from the burnt body and circulated the pictures in media. Seeing those, a woman from Siliguri got in touch with the police and informed that the deceased lived at Ambikanagar in Siliguri.

She was married to a man in Malda a few years ago but was divorced a few months ago. Since then she used to live in Siliguri.

On December 2, she told her family members that she is going to Malda to meet Ghosh. After getting the information, the police detained Ghosh and his wife and interrogated them. During the interrogation Ghosh broke and confessed to crime.

Sources claimed Ghosh a few years ago worked somewhere in SIliguri. There he met with the deceased woman and got involved in a relationship with her. It is suspected that his wife might have come to know about the extramarital affair of her husband and trouble cropped up. The police are probing the case further and trying to know whether Ghosh's wife has any involvement in the murder.
