Man shot at on EM Bypass, friend faces police grilling over ambiguous statement

Kolkata: A person was shot on Wednesday night at Eastern Metropolitan (EM) Bypass near Kamalgazi. The injured victim was subsequently taken to a private hospital, from where he was shifted to SSKM Hospital.

According to police, on Wednesday night, the Inspector in-Charge (IC) of Baruipur was informed by the Baruipur Sub-Divisional Hospital that a person identified as Koushik Gayen, working as a contractual driver in the state Excise department, had been brought with gunshot wound.

The person who had brought the injured victim, stated that his friend was shot somewhere between Narendrapur and Baruipur. But before police could reach Baruipur Hospital, they came to know that Gayen's friend identified as Subhash Dolui had shifted him to a private hospital in Panchasayar. As soon as the information came, police rushed to the hospital and found them there.

During preliminary questioning, Dolui stated that they were returning to Baruipur after attending a Vishwakarma Puja at Mahamayatala. In between Baruipur and Narendrapur, two persons were seen scuffling on EM Bypass.

When Gayen and Dolui tried to stop them, one of those persons shot Gayen. Hearing this, police officials asked Dolui to identify the place but he refused and stated that his first priority was Gayen's treatment and the private hospital was claiming Rs 5 lakh for the operation.

Later, under the supervision of police, Gayen was shifted to SSKM Hospital, where he was still undergoing treatment late on Wednesday night.

Later on Thursday morning, Dolui went with the police and identified the spot, after which it was found that

the area falls under the jurisdiction of Sonarpur police station. Immediately, Sonarpur police station was informed of the incident.

Dolui also claimed that the duo involved in the scuffle was wearing masks. Police personnel from Narendrapur police station tried to investigate the matter on the spot and questioned a few local residents.

However, the locals stated that they did not hear any sound of firing on Wednesday night. Police are currently questioning Dolui owing to the ambiguities in his statement.
