Man found guarding elder sister's decomposed body

Kolkata: The body of a woman was found in a decomposed state from a house at Jawpur in Dum Dum on Tuesday morning. Police found that the brother of the deceased woman was not aware that his sister had died and was guarding her body.

In June 2015, a man, identified as Partha De, was also found living with the body of his elder sister and carcasses of his two pet dogs at Robinson Street in Kolkata. The body had decomposed so much that it had literally turned into a skeleton.

De allegedly had some mental illness and also believed that his sister Debjani was alive. He was treated and reportedly he lead a normal life for some time. He lived at Mother's House. After a few days, he bought a flat at Watgunge where he later reportedly committed suicide.

On Tuesday, when police officers of Dum Dum police station went to the spot, they were reminded of the Robinson Street case. According to the police, on Tuesday, around 11:30 am, some local residents felt a foul smell was emanating from a house at Jawpur.

After a few minutes, the police reached the spot found that the decomposed body of a woman was lying on a bed and a man was sitting next to it. The deceased was identified as Ruma Dutta (55) and the man who was the brother of the woman was identified as Biswarup Dutta. Biswarup was literally found guarding his elder sister's body.

However, the police came to know from local residents that Ruma's husband Biswanath Dutta had left her a long time ago. Since then, she used to live with her brother at the house in Jawpur. But none of them interacted with local residents. A few local residents claimed that both Ruma and Biswarup were suffering from mental illness.

After the police sent the body for autopsy, officers tried interacting with Biswarup. During the conversation, Biswarup said he was not aware that Ruma has died.

A source said it is suspected that Ruma died at least four days ago. But, Biswarup's statement was not helpful to throw light on the woman's death.

The police are waiting for the autopsy report. Officers are talking to the relatives of Ruma and Biswarup. Biswarup has been handed over to his kin and cops suggested that he needed medical help to overcome his illness.
