Malay De holds meet to expedite work of elevated corridor

Kolkata: Chief Secretary Malay De held a high level meeting to ensure fast execution of the task of building elevated corridor on Kona Expressway.

Sources said that in the meeting at the state secretariat on Friday, directions have been given to all the stake holders involved to do the necessary, so that the project can be given a shape as early as possible.

Sources said that there was a detailed discussion on the steps needed at present for the project. Immediate steps needed for removal of underground pipelines and cables was also discussed in details in the meeting.

It has been learnt that the Railway authorities have suggested a small change in the design of the project and it has also been discussed in the meeting.

It may be mentioned that a project has been taken up to built a six-lane elevated corridor over Kona Expressway, that will connect National Highway 6 with Vidyasagar Setu. The decision to construct the elevated corridor was taken to ensure that traffic congestion on Kona expressway becomes a matter of the past.

Kona Expressway serves as the entry point to the city and the number of vehicles that operate on the expressway has gone up manifold in the past few years. At the same time, people wanting to reach the state secretariat Nabanna from the National Highway are also required to take the Kona Expressway.

Moreover, the Santragachi Station is also off Kona Expressway. The elevated corridor will also give a permanent solution to the problem of traffic congestion near the station.

Sources said that in Friday's meeting, officials of the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited, Indian Oil and Railway authorities were present.

The district magistrate of Howrah, commissioner of the Howrah City Police and superintendent of Howrah Rural Police were also present in the meeting. Principal Secretary of the Public Works Department Arnab Roy also attended the meeting.
