Parents urged to educate children about do's & don'ts on social media

Speakers at a meeting organised by The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at, Kolkata urged parents to educate their children about the do's and don'ts that need to be followed on social media.
The meeting was held in a hotel in Central Kolkata on Saturday evening. Referring to the recent post on Facebook that led to violence in Basirhat, Shahanshah Mirza, a well known human right activist said that the parents should teach their children about the do's and don'ts which need to be followed on social media. He regretted that even adults "often behave irrationally" and without understanding the consequences of messages that come on WhatsApp they forward it. "Believe me. I spend 15 minutes to half-an-hour everyday deleting messages on WhatsApp. Many of those messages are derogatory and can hurt the sentiments of others. This needs to be stopped and parents and elders should have a bigger role to play in creating awareness among their children."
Craig L Hall, US Consul General, Kolkata said that the US government has always stood beside the Ahmadiyya Community for its attempt to develop better human understanding. "Only through harmony and not division can we can create a better world," he said. Durba Mitra, educationist, said a coordinated effort should be taken to develop tolerance and acceptance among all sections of people. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community was set up in 1889 to spread the message of peace. Now it has branches in 209 countries and through books, brochures and documentaries, the community has taken steps to spread the message of peace and harmony.
