Locals protest over suspension of trains in Purulia

The local residents in Purulia protested on Wednesday after knowing that railway services on a certain stretch would soon get suspended. The railway board recently cancelled 19 trains and diverted routes of seven other trains after a mines fire reached close to the tracks on the Dhanbad-Chandrapura segment. This has stopped the services of Jhargram-Purulia-Dhanbad Passenger, Ranchi-Jhalda-Kotshila-Dhanbad Passenger and Ranchi-Asansol-Howrah Intercity Express which pass through Purulia. The movement of goods train on the 34 km long Dhanbad-Chandrapura segment under the East Central Railway was also suspended. The board has also shut some railway lines in Jharkhand suspecting an underground mines fire.

Meanwhile, most of the daily passengers in Purulia alleged that the rail authority did not even inform them the reason of suspension of those trains. Some of them also alleged that the authority should arrange some alternative trains for them. But no such steps were taken.

"I was a regular passenger in some of the trains. But I was informed that these trains will not be available now. The rail authority did not even inform me the reason," said a local resident.

The daily passengers have alleged that the students and the teachers would face a lot of problem as the summer vacation is over now. "We will inform the matter to local MLA and MP and request them to bring a solution to this issue," another resident said.

It may be mentioned that on the basis of recommendation of the Director General of Mines Safety (DGMS), the railway board on June 10 had declared the Dhanbad-Chandrapura segment as unsafe for its closeness to Jharia mines fire. The land around the coalfield has also started caving in and the age-old railway tracks are no longer safe.
