Govt to hold TET examinations every year

The state government will hold TET examinations every year to recruit primary teachers, said Manik Bhattacharya, president, West Bengal Board of Primary Education.

The government had recently concluded the recruitment process of TET which was long pending for legal problems. Around 42,000 vacancies of primary teachers across the state were filled up. West Bengal Board of Primary Education, the state-run organisation which oversees the recruitment of primary teachers across the state is now gearing up for the next TET examination.

"The government will declare TET examinations every year as per the requirement of teachers. The number of requirement of teachers may not be same every year. But the government will conduct the examination every year," Manik Bhattacharya, president, West Bengal Board of Primary Education told Millennium Post on Wednesday.

It may be mentioned that the state government recently had declared that recruitment of 74,400 teachers in primary, secondary and higher secondary schools within this year.

The student-teacher ratio, which was once a major concern in Bengal, is now steady. The ration was quite unstable during the tenure of the erstwhile Left Front government. It was found that there was a greater number of teachers than students in some schools. Some other schools recorded severe paucity of teachers.

"The process of recruitment through TET will strictly be based on merit. But the other credentials will also be checked and verification will be done before a person is recruited. In the new TET examination, we will follow the guidelines of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE)," said an Education department source. The state government had a relaxation on NCTE guideline till March this year. But the candidates of TET in future should have necessary training and 50 per cent marks in Higher Secondary examination. The district inspectors submitted reports on requirement of teachers and the government's plan is to distribute the teachers according to the basis of student strength.
