KMC students & teachers to get raincoats, umbrellas

Kolkata: Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will soon handover raincoats free of cost to its school students and umbrellas to its teachers. This was announced by the Education department of the civic body in a programme organised by KMC to mark the occasion of Teachers' Day on Wednesday.

"We had earlier decided to provide our students and teachers with umbrellas. However, Mayor Sovan Chatterjee has proposed that students should be given raincoats. Hence, we have cancelled the proposal of handing over umbrellas and will be distributing raincoats. The e-tender for this will be floated soon. We want to complete the entire process by March 2019 so that our students can use them in the rainy season next year," Member Mayor-in-Council (Education), KMC Avijit Mukherjee said. He added that umbrellas for the teachers will be handed over by this year.

In the programme on the occasion of Teachers' Day at Uttam Manch on Wednesday, Mayor proposed to the Education department to handover raincoats as primary students will find it difficult to handle umbrellas.

There are 253 schools that are run by KMC in the city with a student strength of around 25,000. The Mayor also announced the extension of contract by six months for the 100 odd teachers who have been recruited by the Education department in recent times. It may be mentioned that in the winter months last year, the civic body had handed over sweaters free of cost to

the students.
