Indian Museum hikes ticket prices, clicking pics on mobile to cost extra

Kolkata: The authorities of the Indian Museum implemented a new ticket pricing on Friday, in addition to extending the timings for visiting the iconic historical landmark of the city. The entry ticket for adults has been hiked to Rs 50, from Rs 20 earlier. For students till the age of 18, the ticket price has been increased to Rs 20.

Museum director Rajesh Purohit said: "The Indian museum is a grant-in-aid institution and we get the grant from the government of India. We have received instructions from the government to raise the revenue by 30 percent, to meet the challenges such as salary, pension, maintenance and other expenditures. To increase the revenue by 30 percent is virtually impossible, but we will now aim to increase the revenue by 15 percent after the hike."

He further added: "In a civilised world, it is important to understand the value of heritage. We have increased the ticket prices with an aim to receive quality visitors. If you go to Victoria Memorial, you will see many people sitting on the lawn instead of going inside and seeing the artifacts. Similarly, in this museum, we do not want people to just come and occupy the benches

since the price of the tickets

was very low. We want people who are truly interested in history."

Apart from the hike in the entry fee, the museum is also charging an amount of Rs 50 from visitors for mobile photography which was not chargeable earlier.

The authorities have also done away with the seasonal timings as earlier, the museum used to stay open till 4:30 pm during the winters and 5 pm during the summers.

Visitors will now be allowed to stay till 6:30 pm in the evening on weekdays and till 8 pm on the weekends, apart from having its gates open for

history buffs in the city all-year-round.
