Guv, Education Min call on JU V-C, Pro V-C

Kolkata: Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University Suranjan Das and Pro Vice-Chancellor Pradip Kumar Ghosh were both discharged from the private hospital in Dhakuria on Saturday afternoon. Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar who is the Chancellor of JU and state Education minister Partha Chatterjee visited the hospital earlier in the day and enquired about the health condition of Das.

Both of them were admitted to the hospital on Thursday with complaints of headache, vertigo, palpitation and nausea caused by accelerated hypertension. The duo attempted to bring the situation under control after Union minister Babul Supriyo was involved in a heated altercation with the students who shouted slogans and showed black flags to him.

Das, who was admitted to the ICU with high blood pressure, was shifted to a normal cabin on Friday after his health parametres improved.

"After a thorough examination, senior internal medicine specialist Dr R K Dutta Roy, their supervising physician, decided to discharge both of them on Saturday. He has advised a week's rest for both of them," a spokesperson of the hospital said. Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar called on Das and Ghosh at the hospital at around 10 am and spent time with both of them. "The V-C indicated that he looks forward to the support of the Chancellor in restoring normalcy in the university. The Chancellor indicated that as guardian, he would engage in all-out effort to interact with the students, faculty and the management so that the University is put on the growth trajectory and wholesome environment for education is available to the students who are the future of the nation," a press statement from Raj Bhavan read.

It is learnt that Dhankhar has greatly appreciated the stand of the V-C that he would organise an interaction with the faculty members in the near future. "The Chancellor looks forward to such an interaction with optimism," the statement read. The Governor's statement after meeting the V-C on Saturday assumes significance as on Friday a statement from the Raj Bhavan attributed to the Governor had questioned the role of Das and the police administration in providing adequate security arrangement when he visited the campus after receiving the news of Supriyo's alleged confinement.

State Education minister Partha Chatterjee after paying a visit to Das in the hospital said: "Some people have realized that what should ideally be their role and have changed their standpoint."

Das, while being discharged from the hospital, told reporters that both the Chancellor and the Education minister had a constructive discussion with him. He said: "I am hopeful that such an incident will not happen again in JU in future."
