Groups clash in Suri over dominion of sand mining in area

Tension ran high at Durgapur village under Suri police station in Birbhum on Friday after a clash broke out between two groups over sand mining.

Members of the groups set fire to a nearby slum at Balighat area. A motorcycle was also set on fire. The members of the group also vandalised two vehicles that were parked in the area. The vehicles were damaged in the incident and some persons also received injuries in the incident.

After being informed, senior officers rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. It was learnt that both the groups were trying to take control over the area so that they can indulge in illegal sand mining. Police said that members of one group opposed the other group members from entering the area. The accused members of the group also beat up some local people who protested against the incident. The accused also stocked some bombs in the nearby areas. After being informed, the bomb squad reached the spot and defused them after taking them to a desolate place.

A huge contingent of police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. The local people have alleged that clashes often break out over mining of sands in the area between the two groups. It often turns violent as the rival groups attack each other with arms. Police fail to take any steps against the accused, alleged the local people.

Meanwhile, police have started an investigation in this connection but are yet to arrest anybody.
