Google remembers Kamini Roy

Kolkata: Google on Saturday in its doodle put up the photograph of a nearly-forgotten woman poet and activist Kamini Roy to mark her 155th birth anniversary.

One of the early honours graduates in the country, her poems had been included in school textbooks till the early 1980s. Born in a Bramho family, Roy became a graduate with honours in Sanskrit from Bethune College in 1886. Her first book on poetry Alo O Chaya with an introduction by well-known poet Hemchandra Bandyopadhyay came out when she was only 15 years old. She was very close to Jagadish Chandra Bose and his wife Abala. A teacher of Sanskrit College, Roy wrote many essays on women's emancipation and independence in 1910.
