GJM lines up agitations against CAB & NRC, burns effigies of Amit Shah

Darjeeling: GJM president Binay Tamang has demanded that Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts be declared as protected areas and that Inner Line Permit (ILP) be introduced in these districts to protect the land and the people from intruders as the area is surrounded by four international borders.

However, the political outfit from the Hills has vehemently opposed the Citizen Amendment Bill (CAB) and National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (Binay Tamang faction) has lined up a series of agitation programmes against CAB and the effigies of Union Home minister Amit Shah and Raju Bishta, BJP MP of Darjeeling, were torched at Darjeeling on Tuesday.

"We vehemently oppose CAB and NRC. While tabling the Bill in Lok Sabha on Monday, Union Home minister Amit Shah had dubbed all those who did not make it

onto the NRC in Assam as intruders. The 19 lakh people whose names did not feature in the NRC in Assam include 1 lakh Gorkhas," said an irate Tamang.

The GJM has demanded that the Indian Gorkhas be declared as original inhabitants like the Santhals and others during NRC in Assam.

"We further demand that no rehabilitation camp should be constructed for the refugees in the districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts," added Tamang.

He further questioned why Bista is silent along with BJP MLA from Darjeeling Neeraj Zumba, despite making tall promises of protecting Gorkhas.

"All political parties and other organisations should come together and raise their voices against CAB and NRC," stated Tamang.

On December 13, dharnas will be launched by GJM in the DM and SDO offices in Darjeeling and Kalimpong, while on December 19, deputations against CAB and NRC will be given.

"All Central government offices will be gheraoed from December 23 to 27 in the two districts. After this we will hold an emergency meeting to chalk out future course of action," added Tamang.
