Four of family die after car comes between trucks

Four members of a family were killed and one injured critically in a road accident that took place on National Highway 2 near Andal in West Burdwan on early Saturday morning when the car the victims were travelling in was crushed between two trucks.

Police said that the car lost its control and hit a truck from behind. Another truck which was coming from behind rammed into the car leading to the death of the four family members. The incident had triggered tension on the Kajora Road near Andal, police said.

Police said that the incident happened at 11.45 pm on Friday when the family members were returning home at Rana Pratap area in Durgapur after attending a marriage ceremony at Ghantipahar in Bankura.

It was learnt that one Jibon Mukherjee was driving the vehicle when he lost his control over the vehicle and it rammed into a truck from behind.

He is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital. Within few seconds after the car had hit the truck from behind, another truck going in the same direction rammed into the car. As the impact of the accident was huge, the car was almost crushed between the two trucks.

Local residents rushed to the spot immediately after the accident and took part in the rescue operation.

After being informed, the police reached the spot and rescued the critically injured passengers with the help of the local people. Four out of five members of the family who were travelling in the car were declared brought dead after being taken to a hospital.

The incident had resulted in a huge traffic jam in the area this morning.

The local people protested against the rash driving of trucks on the National Highway 2 and demanded stern action against the drivers who flout traffic norms. A huge contingent of police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

The drivers of both the trucks have fled from the spot immediately after the accident. Police are conducting raids to nab the culprits and have started a probe in this regard.
