BALURGHAT: A foot-bridge located in the middle of Balurghat collapsed on Thursday afternoon, luckily leaving no one injured. Any kind of movement on the bridge has temporarily been suspended until it gets repaired properly, said an official source of Balurghat civic body.

According to sources, the bridge connects Dak-bungalow and Gitanjali areas. An eyewitness said that the middle portion of the structure suddenly collapsed into a canal below in the afternoon. Engineers and officials of Balurghat civic body rushed to the spot after hearing about the incident.

"The 100 meter long iron foot-bridge was constructed during Left Front regime around 20 years ago, while the papers of the structure are not available. Repair work of the bridge will be undertaken after proper inspection. Initially we have banned any kind of movement on the bridge," said a civic officer.

"Hundreds of people pass through the area. The concerned authority has to find out the cause of the collapse. Action will be taken against those whose negligence has caused the incident," he said.
