Faulty NRC list: Mamata to take part in protest walk

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee will take part in a walk on Thursday to protest against the publication of faulty NRC list in Assam in which names of 19 lakh people have been deleted.

The rally will start from Sinthee More and will end at Shyambazar Five Point Crossing. MPs of the Trinamool Congress along with councillors in North Kolkata are expected to take part in the procession. The rally is likely to start at 1 pm.

Banerjee has said over and again that the NRC has been done to create fear psychosis among the masses. Through the NRC, the BJP government is trying to polarise the country, she maintained.

The Chief Minister has categorically said that the state government will not allow the Centre to prepare the NRC in Bengal.

It may be recalled that after the publication of the draft list in Assam in March, Banerjee had sent a team of the party's MPs and MLAs that included Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Mamatabala Thakur, Firhad Hakim and Mahua Mitra to meet those whose names have been dropped from the draft list. The names of around 41 lakh people had been dropped from the list.

However, the Assam government did not allow the team to meet those whose names had been dropped and they were also not allowed to step outside Guwahati airport. Banerjee alleged that the names of family members of Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, former President of India, have been dropped too from the list.
