Fate of Vivekananda Flyover hangs in balance as govt awaits inputs from 2 Central bodies

Kolkata: The state government is waiting for suggestions from two Central government agencies on whether Vivekananda Flyover should be pulled down or not.
Sources said that the two agencies have suggested in a meeting of the expert committee headed by Chief Secretary Malay De, to rethink before taking steps to pull down the flyover.
So, the agencies have been urged to come up with their suggestions on what step should be taken in this regard.
It has been learnt that the experts of Kharagpur IIT have highlighted in their report what would happen if the flyover is not pulled down and at the same time, they have also mentioned the outcome, if decision is taken to completely bring down the flyover.
In such a situation, a high-level meeting has been held in Nabanna, but the state government is yet to come to a conclusion as the two agencies will be giving their suggestions.
Though the next date of the meeting is yet to be discussed, sources said that decision would be taken soon in this regard.
It was found after inspection that one needs to get inside the hollow square girders of the flyover for welding the same, if decision is taken to strengthen the structure.
During discussions, engineers have pointed out that it is quite impossible to undertake the task.
So, the state government is waiting for suggestions of the two agencies, only after which the final decision regarding the flyover will be taken.
