Family ransacks hospital after child's death

Kolkata: Some relatives of a three-year-old child, who died at Institute of Child Health in Park Circus, ransacked the hospital after the news of her death was announced on

Thursday morning.

A large contingent of police went to the hospital and brought the situation under control. Computers and furniture worth several lakhs of rupees were destroyed. The hospital authorities have ordered a probe into the matter.

Three-year-old Sana Sajjad who was suffering from high fever was brought to the hospital around 2 am.

She was admitted to the hospital. Sana's relatives alleged that there was inordinate delay in starting the treatment. They had to virtually beg to the doctors to begin the treatment as the child's condition deteriorated. They further alleged that despite repeated requests the hospital authorities refused to inform them about her health condition.

On Thursday morning, the hospital authorities broke the news of her death to the relatives. Infuriated over the announcement, some relatives went to the hospital and ransacked the reception and the doctors' chamber.

The incident created panic among the relatives and parents of other children who are receiving treatment at the hospital.

A large contingent of police came to the spot and brought the situation under control. The doctors said the hospital has all the facilities that is why the child was not

referred elsewhere.

Refuting the allegation that no senior doctors were present at the hospital and the sisters had not looked after the child, the authority said expert doctors had attended the child and they did everything they could to save her life.
