Education dept gears up to bring Class V under primary

Kolkata: The state Education department has began ground work for bringing Class V under the ambit of the state Primary Board and with this objective, has began work for developing infrastructure in the primary schools across the state.

A recent notification has been sent from the Education department to the primary district inspectors (DI) to take measures for erecting extra classroom facilities in the schools.

The DIs have also been asked to construct boundary walls in the schools for boosting security.

The schools with lack of infrastructure have been asked to inform the department in a specific format so that measures can be taken to revamp the same.

The total number of primary schools in the state currently stands at 50,108 that include classes from nursery to Class IV. If class V comes under the ambit of primary then the student strength will go up by 16 lakh.

The schools have been asked to inform in detail about how many extra classes need to be constructed and what other infrastructural developments need to be taken up.

As per assessment of the department, 40,000 extra classes have to be set up to make this a reality.

According to sources in the primary board, the state

government has recruited nearly 60,000 teachers at the primary level since 2011, after the Trinamool Congress government assumed power in

the state.
