Couple found dead in Salt Lake flat

Kolkata: An elderly person and his wife were found dead inside their flat located at Sukantanagar in Salt Lake on Monday morning. Sleuths suspect that they had committed suicide as a note was recovered in which it was stated that the family was going through a financial crunch and could not continue with their mentally challenged son's treatment.

The couple has been identified as Ranjit Das (67) and Mamata Das (56).

According to locals, on Monday, Ranjit and Mamata's son aged around 22 years, approached them and stated that his parents have committed suicide.

Some locals rushed to their flat and found Ranjit hanging from a ceiling fan while Mamata was lying on the bed unconsciously.

Immediately, Bidhannagar South police station was informed. Sleuths sent both Ranjit and Mamata's bodies to Bidhannagar Sub-Divisional Hospital where doctors declared both of them brought dead.

Neighbours also informed that the Das family used to reside at the flat for the past six years. Their two daughters are married and their son is mentally challenged.

Locals claimed that Ranjit and Mamata's son used to get violent often. A few months ago, he ransacked a local shop and tried to attack a person with a sharp weapon. He also used to torture his parents.

Recently, he was admitted to a hospital where his treatment was going on. Four days ago he had been released.

Ranjit used to own a jewellery shop in Beliaghata which he had to sell to continue their son's treatment.

Despite selling the shop, they had to spend all their savings and even borrowed a lot of money from several people.

Locals informed that their son used to beat them up often for no good reason.

Sources informed that a suicide note was found from the room in which Ranjit and Mamata's bodies were found stating that they were going through a financial crunch and thus, they were forced to commit suicide.

It was also written that their daughters will be the joint owners of the flat after their death.

Also, Ranjit and Mamata asked them to leave their mentally challenged brother on the road as they should not think about him anymore.

Though the suicide note was recovered, sleuths are not sure about the suicide angle.

This is because, apparently, there was no sign of poisoning on Mamata's body.

Sleuths suspect that Ranjit must have killed her before hanging himself.

Sources informed that both of their daughters identified the handwriting in the note as Mamata's.

Police are waiting for the autopsy report.
