Building collapses at Amherst Street

Kolkata: At a time when continuous house collapse at Bowbazar, due to alleged East-West Metro work, is making headlines, a residential building collapsed at Amherst Street on Thursday. A woman was severely injured and shifted to a nearby hospital.

According to sources, the one storied-building on the

APC Road collapsed at 12.10 pm. A woman got trapped under the roof of the ground floor that collapsed. Immediately the local residents rescued the woman.

The victim has been identified as Ruma Bose. The 50-year-old woman suffered multiple injuries. She is undergoing treatment at female surgical ward of Marwari Relief Society Hospital.

While the reason of the building collapse is not known, penalty will be imposed on the building owner if it was found constructed illegally. However, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation is likely to take the matter seriously if the owner of the building is at fault.

In another tragic incident, a 20-year-old man lost his life in a road accident on Thursday.

According to sources, the incident took place on Commissariat Road and Clyde Row crossing near Ordinance at 12: 10 am.

The HGV (heavy goods vehicle) lost control and collided with luxury cab and a roadside tree causing serious injuries to the driver.

The driver of the luxury cab, however, escaped unhurt.

Rakesh Kumar, who was driving the HGV, was rescued at 1:35 am. The driver of the HGV, who was trapped inside the cabin, suffered severe injuries.

He was rushed to the SSKM Hospital where he was declared brought dead. Ramesh was a resident of Barari Badlu Chowk, Goradih in Bhagal district of Bihar.
