'Branding is required for IIT Kharagpur'

Eminent chemical scientist and former chairman of IIT standing committee Professor Manmohan Sharma said that IIT Kharagpur's outstanding performance is not as well known in the society as it should be. "None of the IITs has so many diverse courses that IIT Kharagpur has. It has had a glorious start and has made progress continuously, measured from different perspectives. However, I feel that the outstanding performance is not as well known in the society as it ought to be. Branding is required for the institute," Professor Sharma, the chief guest said addressing the 63rd convocation of the institute on Sunday.
Professor Sharma also shared the opinion that the number of PhDs that the premier central institute churns out should be more than what it should be. IIT Kharagpur should fix a target. There should be 650 PhDs in a year by 2025. There is now a commitment that by 2020, the intake of PhDs in five older IITs and IIT Guwahati will be 10,000," he said. Terming the prodding of Prof Sharma as an advice for the institute Professor Partha Pratim Chakraborti, director of IIT Kharagpur said that they have become much more aggressive when it comes to branding particularly through social media. However, he said that IIT Kharagpur has a natural tendency of maintaining a low key. "People say things when something is in planning stage. However, we share something when something is really on the stage of execution. He has said this because he feels this will attract good faculty and more students," he added.
Meanwhile, Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar pitched for private investment and alumni contribution for education to grow.
