Branded a witch, old woman forced to live under tree outside village

An elderly woman was driven out of her village on the allegation of practising witchcraft. Accusing the woman of killing people with black magic, the villagers beat her up by the villagers and also looted her properties. She is now staying under a tree, just outside the village. The incident took place at Ausgram's Sukhadanga in Burdwan district.

A local source, however, informed that a Kangaroo court was convened to ascertain the fate of the elderly woman. The court directed the villagers to drive the woman out of the village. However, the Ausgram Police Station said they have not received any complaint. But they will definitely look into the matter.

It was learnt that a villager, Sanyasi Hansda informed the other villagers that the woman is a witch. He also added that she practices witchcraft every night with the intention to kill the male persons of the village.

Just a day after Sanyasi informed the villagers that the woman is actually a witch, Sanyasi's daughter fell ill.

The girl was suffering from an unknown fever and was taken to a rural health centre. The health workers could not do anything as the girl died there.

Sanyasi and his wife Lakshmi took their child's body to the aged people of the village. They alleged that the elder woman, who is a witch, killed their daughter.

They also alleged that their daughter fell ill after the elderly woman took her on her lap.

However, the village headman decided to convene a Kangaroo Court to decide the fate of elderly woman.

The Kangaroo Court directed her to give Rs 1.20 Lakh to Sanyasi and Lakshmi but the woman said that she cannot give away such huge amount due to her financial conditions. The court then reduced the amount to Rs 10,000 but that amount was also impossible for the woman. She said that she only has Rs 500 which she was ready to give away.
