Bengal Govt to train SHGs for paddy procurement

Kolkata: The State Self-Help and Self-Employment Department has decided to involve rural women through self-help groups (SHG) in the procurement of paddy from farmers.
To make it fast and error-free, the Government would provide them with tabs.
The training would begin from June and July, in stages.
Already, almost 4,500 SHGs are involved in procuring paddy.
For this work, the SHGs will be getting Rs 31 per quintal.
Rice mill owners will be responsible for collecting the paddy and transporting them on lorries to their mills for the rice to be extracted, as they do now.
The Food and Supplies Department is paying the cost of transportation.
Besides empowering, involving village women has another advantage.
Since SHG members from a village would go to farmers from the same village to buy their paddy, prior acquaintance will help them to convince the farmers to sell to the State Government.
Thus the Government's stocks will be kept up to the mark.
