Baruipur Correctional Home to have all facilities for inmates, top-notch security

Kolkata: The state Correctional Administration (CA) department has already taken measures to develop Baruipur Central Correctional Home (BCCH) with several modern facilities for the inmates, as well as foolproof security for them. The BCCH was inaugurated by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday, through remote control from Nabanna.

"The BCCH has already been equipped with several facilities like a modern kitchen, a big dining space and more space for the inmates who remained crammed at Alipore Central Correctional Home (ACCH). There will be more facilities, the work for which is going on in full swing," a senior official of the CA department said.

It may be mentioned that BCCH is having steam machine for fast and pollution-free cooking. Rice, dal and curry will be cooked in just 40 minutes. There will be no use of earthen ovens, which were used at ACCH.

The BCCH will have the capacity to lodge 2,250 inmates. 850 inmates have already been shifted from ACCH on Wednesday. The remaining will be shifted in phases.

There will be space for marching of the jail employees and no outsiders will be able to enter during such activities. There were similar facilities at ACCH but the area was not covered and common people often encroached.

"The boundary wall of the facility is 7.5 metre high, greater than the 6.5 metre tall wall in Alipore. There are a large number of CCTVs for strong security and laser technology will be used as well," the official said.

"We have given special emphasis on security at BCCH and have taken all possible measures for a fooproof security mechanism," said Ujjal Biswas, state CA minister.

The model of the Mandoli Prison in Delhi will be followed for further developmental work in BCCH. "There will be a gymnasium and separate infrastructure for playing games like hockey, football and badminton. There will be facilities of a library and also an auditorium for holding workshops for the inmates.

"There can be no denial of the fact that ACCH was crammed for space. There will be more space for the inmates in BCCH," the official added.

The government also has plans to come up with a healing garden in the BCCH premises, for which garden architects are being consulted.

The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) has completed the entire work for the infrastructure of BCCH that includes drinking water, drainage, lighting and most importantly, the approach road leading to the correctional home.
