Balurghat Law College: Love notes, lyrics in answer sheets lead to suspension of 10 students

Ten students of Balurghat Law College, who wrote love letters in their answer sheets during the examination, were suspended for two years following the actions taken up by University of Gour Banga. The university authority informed their decision to the college on Tuesday.

Recently an investigation revealed that the students wrote love letters, lyrics of romantic numbers and poems instead of answers in the examination answer sheets. The students along with others came back to stage a protest in the university campus after their results were published.

They damaged properties in the university campus alleging manipulation in checking answer sheets.

The University took the decision to suspend the students on the basis of a police complaint. The Malda district police started a suo moto case against the accused students.

It may be mentioned that the results of the students of Balurghat Law College under the University of Gour Banga was published on January 15.

Some students of second and fourth semesters started protesting in the campus alleging that their copies were not checked properly.

"Later, those students started ransacking the university campus. After the incident, the university authority had rechecked the answer sheets and found that they wrote love letters and lyrics of Hindi songs. Malda district police were asked to probe the incident," the source added.

"It was really an unfortunate incident. The University set up a fact-finding committee which found that those students wrote love letters instead of answers. The committee even summoned the accused students for hearing but two among the ten students were absent. The examiners then recorded their version and took the decision to suspend them for two years," said Sanatan Das, the acting Controller of Examinations, University of Gour Banga.

In will be recalled, twelve students of the university were injured when a clash had broken out between two groups in the campus early this year.

State Education minister Partha Chatterjee had canceled the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) student wing at University of Gourbanga, following several allegations against them. The minister had taken that decision after getting a report from the Vice-Chancellor about that clash.
