Backward Classes Welfare dept starts special cell, helplines

Kolkata: The state Backward Classes Welfare (BCW) department on Monday constituted a special cell and also announced a toll-free number along with a number for WhatsApp and text messages, so that the people belonging to these classes can state their problems or grievances, if any. The toll free number is 18005727730, while the number for message and WhatsApp is 91-8582956555.

The move comes in the wake of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's instruction to the department to ensure that the SC, ST, tribals or other backward classes do not face any harassment in getting their caste certificates.

It may be mentioned that the BCW department has handed over more than 90,000 caste certificates to beneficiaries in the last three weeks, by organising camps across the district.

"We have held 1,400 camps across districts and have distributed 40,000 caste certificates to the people," an official said.

The District Magistrates of South 24-Parganas, Jhargram, West Midnapore, North Dinajpur and West Burdwan have supervised the matter in different blocks and have show-caused six inspectors for dereliction of duty.

On July 2, thChief Minister had held a meeting with all 84 SC and ST MLAs, irrespective of their political affiliation, at the state Assembly and instructed the concerned officials to expedite the process of disbursement of SC/ST certificates and not to dilly-dally regarding the same as the backward classes require them for admission from school to university and also in jobs of state and Central government.
