Army jawan's wife found dead in Khardah, family alleges murder

Kolkata: Mystery shrouds the death of an Army jawan's wife who was declared dead at College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital in Kamarhati.

The victim, identified as Sweta Das, was a resident of Dakshinpally in Khardah. The family members of the victim have lodged a complaint with the police bringing murder charges against the husband who is undergoing treatment at a hospital. On the basis of the complaint, Barrackpore police have arrested three persons and are yet to arrest the jawan.

The family members said the victim got married with the accused more than a year ago and was tortured after marriage. Later, he went to Jammu and Kashmir because of his posting but had returned a few days ago. They alleged that Sweta was badly beaten up by the accused on last Saturday and taken to the hospital. As she was declared brought dead by the hospital, the accused husband told her family members that she had committed suicide.

The incident triggered tension in the Khardah Dakshinpally area after the family staged a demonstration in front of the victim's in-laws' house. They alleged that Sweta was strangled to death after being badly beaten up and demanded a high-level inquiry into the incident and stringent punishment against the accused. The agitation was later lifted following intervention from senior police officers.

The family members also alleged that the accused youth admitted himself to a hospital in Barrackpore to evade an arrest.

The accused might be arrested after he recovers as police have assured the victim's family members that a probe would be conducted and nobody would be spared.
