Abhishek Banerjee sends defamation notice to Modi
Kolkata: Trinamool Congress sitting MP Abhishek Banerjee's lawyer on Saturday wrote a strong letter to Narendra Modi for making derogatory remarks about his client during his recent rally in Diamond Harbour.
Banerjee's lawyer has also sought an unconditional apology from Modi for his derogatory comments. The letter also said that if Modi does not tender his apology to Banerjee within 36 hours, the latter will be constrained to initiate appropriate proceedings against him in accordance with law of the land. Abhishek, a sitting MP from Diamond Harbour, is contesting from the same seat in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
During an election rally in Diamond Harbour on May 15, Modi allegedly passed some remarks which Abhishek found highly defamatory in nature.
The letter to Modi reads: "…My client (Abhishek Banerjee) would have been inclined to welcome legitimate criticism against his name as any politician should, especially to serve his constituents better in pursuance of a robust electoral mandate. However, the malice with which you chose to invoke certain unverified, sensationalist and patently inaccurate information, ostensibly at the behest of your party members, even while knowing such information to be incorrect, has compelled my client to address you vide this letter. In effect,
you made certain wildly fabricated allegations against my client with the sole intent to mislead the people you were addressing in order to besmirch my client's well-earned reputation."
The letter further mentions: "…Your speech, punctuated by false, malicious, and defamatory content, was an embodiment of political calculation and mischievous intent. Your imputations were deliberate and mala fide, perpetrated through thinly-veiled references of bhatija (nephew) and didi while being fully aware that Mamata Banerjee is referred to as Didi and my client himself is the only nephew of Banerjee who is involved in public life and is the sitting MP from Diamond Harbour."
"In your speech, you referred to my client as a gunda or "goon". Such statements, other than being attempts to deceive the public through rhetoric, are hardly appropriate for a person holding
your position. My client denies all your claims and challenges you to provide proof of such deliberate misstatements," stated the letter from Abhishek's lawyer.
