781 people arrested for 'disorderly' conduct

Kolkata: Kolkata Police and Bidhannagar Police have ensured safety of the citizens during the festival days with at least 781 people being arrested for disorderly conduct, drunken driving etc.

Since October 2, the Detective Department (DD), Anti-Rowdy Squad (ARS), Watch Section, Anti-Burglary Squad, Missing Persons Squad and special women's team of Winners of the Kolkata Police kept strict vigil across the city to help people in distress and ensure security from anti-social elements.

According to the police, since October 2, officers of the DD, ARS and other Kolkata Police units were instructed to carry out raids across the city. Also, the teams have been asked to counter any crime reported spontaneously without considering jurisdiction issues.

During the Puja days, ARS personnel in plainclothes nabbed 144 persons for disorderly conduct across the city. Few of the accused were nabbed from the Puja pandals for creating nuisance. Apart from the ARS activity, the "Bandhu Kolkata" initiative which was introduced few years ago was active during the four days of the Puja, between Saptami and Dashami. In this initiative, the Kolkata Police along with Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and several NGOs tied up to help children, women and elderly people during the four days. According to Kolkata Police officials, a total of 15 children were rescued under the initiative this year. 13 children were handed over to their guardians and other two have been sent home for their safe custody. Seven persons who fell ill were admitted to several hospitals and nursing homes under the same initiative.

Also, during the Puja days, 'Winners' held raids in the pandals and nabbed several persons red-handed for allegedly stalking and teasing women. The Anti-Burglary Squad and Watch Section have arrested 18 mobile phone lifters including two women and recovered 16 mobile phones. Apart from the Kolkata Police, Bidhannagar Police have also conducted raids and special naka checks to put a leash on anti-social activities. Sources informed that special naka checkings were conducted under Kaikhali, Airport and NSCBI Airport traffic guards to stop errant bikers and drunken drivers. Throughout the night from Saptami to Dashami, at least 600 drunken drivers have been arrested. Several persons across the Bidhannagar Police jurisdiction were nabbed for disorderly conduct.
