2 NRS nursing students accused in puppy murder case join classes

Kolkata: Moutusi Mondal and Soma Burman, the two nursing students from NRS Medical College and Hospital who were arrested for their alleged involvement in the killing of 16 puppies and later released on bail, went back to their classes on Monday, as the West Bengal Nursing Council (WBNC) had not objected to their joining them.

A senior official of the NRS Medical College and Hospital said: "We have submitted a report to the Swasthya Bhawan after carrying out a probe into the incident. It is the discretion of the West Bengal Nursing Council that takes the decision on issues related to nursing."

"The court has also not imposed any restrictions on their attending classes. We have heard that the two nursing students have joined their classes on Monday," the official added.

It was earlier stated that the two accused nursing students would not be allowed to enter the classes till the probe against them is over. Following the arrest of the two accused, the NRS Medical College and Hospital has also seen agitation by the nursing students who demanded the sterilisation of the dogs on the campus. The fellow nursing students also refused to join classes showing solidarity towards the two accused.

A three-member committee had been constituted by the NRS Medical College and Hospital authorities to probe into the killing of 16 puppies immediately after the incident occurred.

The committee had submitted a three-page report to the hospital in this regard and the hospital authorities later sent the report to the Health department.

Meanwhile, the NRS Medical College and Hospital authorities have responded to the appeal made by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) regarding the vaccination and sterilisation of the dogs which are found inside the hospital campus.

Deputy Mayor Atin Ghosh on Monday said sterilisation would be carried out at NRS Hospital on January 24.

"We have already written to all the hospitals expressing our desire to carry out sterilisation on the dogs. NRS Hospital has responded and we will take the dogs to the dog pound and sterilise them. The dogs which do not need to undergo sterilisation would be vaccinated inside the hospital campus itself. The process would be done at other hospitals as well after they respond to our appeal," Ghosh said.
